GM Dex Cool

Recently I noticed a little scent of coolant coming from my car. I got under the hood to check because usually that means a leak from any number of possible broken parts throughout the complex cooling system. It wasn’t hard to find – right on top of the plastic inlet tank there was a tiny crack letting fluid leak ever so slowly.

I knew I wouldn’t be able to fix that one myself so I called Gerald’s Radiator here in Anderson. I met Gerald on one other occasion and he seemed like a pretty professional good ole boy who knows what he’s doing, so I decided to take my repair need to him. The bill was way better than what I would have had to pay the Cadillac people, but even more valuable than that was the lesson he gave me about Dex Cool.

He showed me articles about Dex Cool clogging up and corroding cooling systems which eventually breaks critical parts all over the engine and transmission because they all depend on the cooling system working properly. I was intrigued because I drive a Cadillac Catera – which comes with Dex Cool in the system. There were pictures of broken and corroded parts all through these trade magazines he had. I was convinced – get that crap out of my car and put in regular antifreeze.

After Gerald was done working on my car he told me he had to unclog one third of my radiator because it was stopped up with sludge that Dex Cool causes. That would explain why in the summer my car would out of the blue run really hot until I turned off the a/c then it would cool back down. I was probably on the verge of major breakdown. I just hope there aren’t any corroded parts that will break later on.

I decided to just do a general google search for what’s out there on the net regarding Dex Cool. There is a ton of stuff about the problems, the lawsuits, and even the good intentions GM has for using it. The hard evidence is convincing enough to me. Good intentions or not – I think Dex Cool is a bad product. I mostly just read the consumer affairs writeup on the Dex Cool issue, and I also read some of the consumer complaints about it.

The article says not to replace Dex Cool with regular Antifreeze, but Gerald was confident it would be ok. I just hope he flushed it out good enough that they didn’t mix because it seems that is the concern with changing to regular from dex cool – they don’t mix well. But it’s a catch 22 – if you don’t change it you’re stuck with a chemical that will eventually tear up your car, and if you do change them you risk mixing the new with the old and having a bad mix in your car. I’m living on the edge I guess and going with the changed fluid that hopefully is pure enough to keep me running a lot longer. I’ll just have it flushed more often to be sure.

Thanks to Gerald for looking out for me. If anyone else has Dex Cool in your car you might have some decisions to make – or at least get that crap flushed often. Whatever you do don’t go by GM’s non-warrantied statement that Dex Cool is good for 100,000 – 150,000 miles because that just isn’t true.

Free Tax Filing

I just finished filing my taxes FOR FREE!! About 4 or 5 years ago I started using TurboTax to file my taxes because I was tired of paying H&R Block hundreds of dollars to sit in a cubicle with a person who didn’t seem any smarter than me and answer questions that they were prompted to ask by a computer system. I figured I could do that myself and decided to try TurboTax. Since then I’ve gotten larger returns because their system does such a good job helping you find your maximum deductions, and I’ve paid less for it – under $100 a year.

BUT THIS YEAR IT IS ABSOLUTELY FREE!!! Since I read several blogs, some of which are money-specific content, I read more than once that you can get TurboTax service for free by going through State Farm. All you have to do is have accounts with State Farm, have online access to those State Farm accounts, and click the link to TurboTax right from the State Farm site. It was just as easy as always, and TurboTax has REALLY improved their application more and more every year to make it easier than ever. It is especially easy after the first year because they transfer all your info from year to year.

I’m just extremely thrilled that I got it for free this time. Now I can’t wait to get my return so I can pay for baby Kylee (who is due pretty much any time now). If you are a State Farm customer I highly recommend getting online access so you can take advantage of free TurboTax. And if you’ve never used TurboTax I highly recommend you do – it’s really great.

Pet Hotel

Baby boomers are spending money on their pets like it is going out of style. I read about 6 or 8 years ago that it would happen and it is proving to be true. The kids are out of the house so baby boomers are pampering their pets. The article I read several years ago was about good businesses to start. Of course this is another opportunity I didn’t take advantage of, but it is one that I probably am not intended for either because I am probably considered in-humane to unruly animals.
PetSmart is doing great with the pet spending trend and their pet hotel initiative is brilliant. I travel on business just enough to cringe at hotel costs and the uncertainty of never knowing what to expect if I reserve one online that is ‘cheap’ (that’s why I usually stick to hotel chains that are consistent everywhere). Anyway, I’d like to ask PetSmart – how much is it per night and can I stay if my dog stays? Rascal – you’re going to earn it. When your lazy butt wakes up make yourself useful and get a place for us to stay for my trip to Raleigh.

Kids’ Birthdays

I’m reading more and more money related blogs – usually because I subscribe to one that sounds interesting and then they link to something else that is interesting. That is how I stumbled upon this post. I love it. I feel the same way but unfortunately I’m not DOING the same thing. My kids are big enough now to know what they got and they’re even starting to pay a little attention to who they got it from. So it’s nice to at least get them a little something from us even though I’d much rather put that money in an interest earning fund for them. But ‘a little something’ seems to get bigger with every birthday. Maybe I’ll get it right with this third one we have on the way and give her a college fund for her birthday. Then I’ll have to play catch up with the other two, and don’t get me started on how much interest I would have earned on Devin’s by now – he’s five years old. We’ve made so many mistakes. Do you ever wish you could go back and just fix stuff?

Links of the Day

There is lots of good stuff in the feeds I subscribe to. Here are some share-worthy posts in case you don’t feed on them already:

Residual Income vs. Passive Income

I’ve been thinking about this post for quite some time but I haven’t known exactly what I wanted to write until today when I read this article on mymoneyblog.com .

You might recall a post I did a while back that mentioned my past involvement with ‘network marketing’ – whatever that means these days. (By the way I still have that business and still have a few customers. I just don’t participate in the networking model any more). When I was really active in the ‘networking’ (others call it pyramid) business model the higher level people would always talk about ‘residual’ income and relate it to Elvis still making millions from his music career and he’s been dead for a long time (that’s like twice in one week I’ve mentioned Elvis on here). They would talk about how you do the work one time and the money keeps coming in.

I never believed 99.99999% of the people in network marketing are truly creating a ‘residual’ income because from what I could tell only the people at the very top of the organization could truly sit back and do nothing (or die – which some of them need to do to actually help their organization) and still make money. Most everyone, even people who were perceived as extremely successful, still had to travel a lot to continue building their network and speak at conferences. If they stopped doing that their income would not be ‘residual’. Their income would tank and they would have to really work at it again – which defeats the definition of ‘residual’.

The article on mymoneyblog was about ‘passive’ income which is often used hand in hand with ‘residual’ but there is a difference. I like the definition mymoneyblog put on passive income because I think passive means ‘not so involved’ or ‘not directly involved’, so income from stocks or from business you own but don’t spend a lot of time working could loosely be defined as passive. Some of the middle level network marketers would be better off using the term ‘passive’ for their income because their involvement might be less but that income is no less dependent on the person.

Residual income in my opinion is income that is left over or still coming in after you’re gone – dead. If I leave a business that makes money for my kids without them working even after I’m dead then I think that is residual income. If a network marketers organization continues to earn money for their family after they’re gone then I think that is residual income. Of course if either one of those scenarios tanks after you’re gone then the residue didn’t stick around very long and that would show just how ‘residual’ that income really was.

All I know is none of my current income can be considered passive or residual by any of the definitions or opinions we’re discussing – except for a life insurance policy my family can collect after I die. I wonder if that can be considered ‘residual income’??

Wedding Expenses

Shawna does weddings. I’d just like to remind everyone of that in case you or anyone you know is having one anytime in the future. She does a great job too. One of these days I want to make her a website and help her get more business because it is something she really loves to do and she’s so good at it.

Anyway, what got me talking about this besides just Shawna’s love for weddings. MyMoneyBlog wrote this about his own wedding expenses and he took an interesting survey about how much people are spending on weddings. Mine and Shawna’s wedding was somewhere in the $5000-$15000 range and Shawna and her mother pretty much did it all (I had little involvement so I don’t even know who all else to give credit to except my parents who handled the traditinal ‘grooms parent’ responsibilities). The impressive part to me is most wedding expenses are directly correlated to how many people are there. We had over 300 people at our wedding, which is well above the average wedding, but the cost was still in the range of what most reasonable weddings cost based on the survey of normal people done by MyMoneyBlog.

If you haven’t had a wedding yet or you know someone who hasn’t (we all know someone meeting that criteria) then keep Shawna in mind – she can put on a great looking wedding as cost effectively as possible. If you already had a wedding you might also find the expense survey results interesting.

Where did your wedding fall on the survey MyMoneyBlog took?

Listen To Passionate People

Who are you listening to? What are you listening to? I choose to listen to people who are knowledgable and passionate about what they’re speaking about. That is why I love to hear Perry Noble speak about Jesus and introducing people to him. That is why I love to hear Jake Beaty speak about marriage and relationships. That is why I love to hear Joe Sangl speak about finances.

If you’ve read my blog much at all you’ve probably seen me link to Joe before. Now we can all experience Joe’s passion, experience, and knowledge via podcast. Click here and pick which link applies to you. You can hear the passion in his voice and I can tell you from my own personal experience with him he knows what he is talking about and he’s smoking what he’s selling. Check it out.

Greedy People

A couple of weeks ago I was reading an article by Michael Masterson. Every time I mention this guy somebody asks me who he is. Click the link. That’s his blog. Do a google search on him and you’ll see he’s a pretty impressive guy.

Anyway, the article I was reading was about doing business favors and how that’s good practice and some poeple are good at it while others aren’t. He talked about how it’s important to not be taken advantage of and not to take advantage of others – to basically be smart about how you do business favors and manage good relationships. But what really struck me at the moment I was reading the article was one paragraph where he described greedy people who aren’t good at having favorable relationships. Here’s what he said:

Greedy, self-centered people believe they can live a better
life by taking advantage of others. What they fail to realize is that the people
they dupe have memories. And influence. Eventually, the world of greedy people
gets smaller. They have very few friends. Fewer business colleagues they can
count on. Little credit. And the high-pressure climate of the bad feelings
they’ve stirred up. They may have a considerable store of material things, but
they haven’t the faintest idea how to enjoy them.
Do you know anybody that matches that description? I know I’ve had some exposure to people like that. They weigh down everyone around them. What’s even more sad is they can sense something isn’t right in their life or their circumstances but they don’t know what it is and they’re too self-centered to think it has anything to do with them. You have to hope they come around and change. Usually after they lose something. Hopefully before they lose everything. Or maybe they’ll just wake up one day and realize how much more they have to gain by being kind, caring, thoughtful, honest, generous, etc. as opposed to being greedy and self centered.

Baby News & Government

We went to the doctor last week. Well actually it’s a midwife. Shawna has decided to take on a new experience this time and give birth to this baby at a midwife center. The biggest difference being there won’t be any anesthesia.

Anyway, all is well. The baby has a healthy heartbeat. The due date is estimated to be February 26th. We should know in about 5 weeks if it is a boy or girl.

The midwife was very nice and has a much different approach to doing things than the typical OB-GYN. Our great friends Lenny & Tathie used this midwife’s services for one of their children and that has a lot to do with Shawna’s choice to go this route. It seems like it will be a good experience.

Of course we’re conscious about the cost but we’re trying to not let that be too much of our focus. There have already been tears in our house because it is just so wrong how much healthcare and insurance costs in this country. A hospital birth with a cash discount would probably cost about the same as the midwife even though we’re probably going to try and get a discount from the midwife’s regular pricing too, but I’ll talk more about those numbers in a later post. (I want to share later some things we’re doing to raise the money to prepare for it since it is what Joe Sangl would call a “known upcoming expense”.) For now I’d like to share something on the humorous and political side.

The midwife is smart. She sends her patients to Greenville Tech for free ultra sounds, so that’s where we’ll go for that. She also uses the public health department for blood work. She drew Shawna’s blood samples last week and we took them to the public health department lab for testing. This is where the political humor comes in. We had to dodge people in the parking lot and walk through several people just hanging around waiting in different doorways and hallways on our way to the lab. We were the only white people in the place. Now I’m all about our free country and cultural diversity and all that so don’t think I’m going down a prejudice trail.

The reason we were the only white people in the place is because everyone else was Mexican. Well I take that back – most of the workers were African-American, but I’m not talking about my fellow citizens. What I want to talk about is all the Spanish-only speaking Mexicans that were there. I say Spanish-only speaking because that’s all they can speak – no Engles (or however they spell it).

Now I don’t want to come across prejudice against any ethnic group because I’m not. Some of my best friends on my soccer team in high school were Mexican – English speaking Mexicans or at least some that were learning English. I’m on a friendly first name basis with the owner of one of my favorite Mexican restaurants here in town – he’s a nice Catholic family man, and he’s Mexican-American. I don’t have a problem with Mexicans in general. I have a problem with the illegal aliens we allow to live in our country and exploit our idiot government programs at we the taxpayers’ expense.

Shawna couldn’t help but laugh as I walked through the place and out loud said “my baby is going to cost me thousands of dollars but I bet his is free” and then as we passed some more people “hey – I bet I’m paying for his baby too”. I was saying it loud enough for them to hear me. You might be thinking what an aweful jerk I am for saying things like that right in front of these people. I have to remind you these were Spanish-only speaking Mexicans. They didn’t understand me and if they did they wouldn’t dare act like it because if they get caught speaking English they might get treated like a citizen.

I’ll stop ranting about this now cause I could go on and on all day, and forgive me if I’m offending someone who is actually trying to become a citizen, speak our language, and work to fund our government for those who really need it. I commend those who are making a better life for themself here without doing it at everyone elses expense. But during those moments the other day I just had to make humor to keep from getting furious that I had to wade through people from another country to get to my own US government funded health department. What is wrong with our leaders?
